'BEST OF 2020' New York City Jazz Record January 2021

'A superb release' 5 STARS Andy Hamilton, Jazz Journal UK

‘…an aurally engaging, deeply emotional and utterly original world of sound...a breathtaking exploratory journey.’
Michael Christopher, Daily Local News US

'The programming of this double album's 25 pieces is as astute as the playing is resourceful. If there's a veiled though-line amid the breadth of invention, it is Spence's love of space, wistfulness and a restrained drama.’ John Shand, Sydney Morning Herald

Alister Spence - solo piano, preparations, percussion

Whirlpool is a solo-piano two-disc set of 23 discrete improvised pieces, making use of the entire piano, inside and out.

The approach I took on the recording session was to play distinct items. I have for quite a while (maybe 30 years!) been seeking a way of playing openly and personally, and I have had the opportunity to play with extraordinary exponents of personal sound-worlds, such as Lloyd Swanton, Toby Hall, Sandy Evans, Satoko Fujii, Raymond MacDonald, Myra Melford, Tony Buck, Joe Williamson, and many others.

There was no pre-meditation before undertaking this recording apart from working on playing and exploring various techniques or sonic areas. In the session tried to create surprises for myself. Starting somewhere without a clear idea of what that would sound like and, as a result, creating puzzles or mazes which I try to follow, or not follow. Sometimes I try to deliberately change direction to create more puzzles or places of sonic interest and exploration. I am very attracted to ‘accidental’ sounds. I think they often offer a way to finding unexpected and new connections in the form and the sound of the music. I also enjoy the overtone content of sounds and try to be aware of that when playing.
