ARIA Best Australian Jazz Album Nominee 2004

‘This is the sound of the hammer striking the nail right on the head, sweetly, every time.’ Financial Review, Australia

Alister Spence - piano, samples on tracks 4 and 6
Lloyd Swanton - double bass
Toby Hall - drums, percussion, glockenspiel

It is hard to believe that 3 years have passed since our last recording. However, in that time new material has been working its way in to our repertoire and it seems a good time to document the music we have been playing most recently.
Once again the music encompasses a wide range stylistically from the swing 3 feel of the opening track [Hiatus] to the repeated chords of the last [Let it Ring], which is written as an excuse to use the sustain pedal on the piano, hence the title. Several times in the last few years we have featured the music of the late American pianist/composer Horace Tapscott in our concerts, so it seemed fitting to record his wonderful ballad, Lullaby in Black.

'Expressing a style based on mainstream and integrating free form and new sensations that remind us of Paul Bley, it would be no exaggeration to say that Spence's intellectual taste, and the fact that he doesn't get caught up in ritual or tradition, highlights an outstanding personality, and that indeed he is fully rivalling the pianists who have brought about the present boom in piano trio music'

In just two years the distinctive Overs tone created by these changes to traditional piano design has been acclaimed both in Australia and internationally. Overs 225 pianos are currently in production for the Conservatorium High School and the Sydney Conservatorium.
